Lonnie Jehle: If you're using a front loading washer, there's a slot where detergent goes. If you're using a top-loader, you just dump the detergent in the tub, and it's best to put the detergent in after the water starts going in and before the clothes go in, especially if you are using powdered detergent which needs time or warm water to dissolve properly. Check the label on the bottle or box for how much to use for each type of machine. Top loaders need more than front loaders. Modern detergents are quite powerful and there's no point in using too much but use a little more if the clothes are really dirty. I only use a few tablespoons in my top loader for a full load unless the clothes are extremely grubby. Don't think that because you don't see a pile of suds the detergent isn't working. Detergents are made not to produce too much suds. You can wash everything in cold water if you want, but hot or warm is often better for whites. Be careful washing brand new clothing.! Some dyes can run and leave splotches over other clothes. If you have something new, especially if it's jeans or something strongly coloured, wash it with similarly coloured items for a few washes. You can also buy Color-Catchers, which absorb dyes while they wash with the clothes. They seem to work. Clothing that has both white and a colour is usually safe to wash with whites. Not always, but usually. Cheap stuff has dyes that run. All clothing comes with a label with care instructions on it. They are little symbols in red, yellow, and green. Look at them. You can find an explanation of them if you google "laundry symbols". Select a cycle suited to the clothes you're washing. Most washers have a regular cycle which is for most ordinary cotton or cotton blend clothing like shirts and pants, towels and sheets. That's the one you'll probably use 90% of the time. There is a permanent press cycle for synthetics and there is a delicate cycle for things woollens and delicate ite! ms like lingerie. You can usually also select a longer or shor! ter regular cycle. Longer for heavily soiled clothes, shorter for less dirty clothes. You can select the water level too. Self-explanatory: if the washer is full, choose the highest level. Don't cram clothes in, just place them there. Trying to wash too much at once means poorer washing and extra wear and tear on the machine....Show more
Melvina Bieri: Meh, I just throw it all in there and keep darks and lights separate. I wash them all on the same normal setting at home (but the washers at my university are all automatic so I don't even worry about that) and put in a cup full of detergent.Don't forget to throw in a dryer sheet when you're drying them.I dry lights and darks together when at university to save money, but at home I dry them separately....Show more
Dorris Homola: First make sure to divide colors from whites. Also a BIG help is to read the tags in the items before you wash them. Some only can handle cool or cold water. Some items cannot be put in! dryer. Some items that are close to the same color still can be washed together but you would just not leave them in the dryer as long. Just set the dryer to go off sooner than turn back on after taking the stuff out that was dry.
Debora Rinderer: InstructionsDifficulty: EasySteps1Step OneTo do laundry, first sort your dirty clothes, making separate piles for whites, bright colors and darks. If you mix whites with colors in the wash, the colors may bleed onto and ruin your whites. Also separate clothes that tend to produce lint (towels, sweatshirts, chenille and flannel) from clothes that tend to attract lint (corduroy, velvets and permanent-press clothes). 2Step TwoAs you sort, close zippers to prevent snagging, and empty pockets (you don't want soggy shreds of facial tissue all over your clothes!). 3Step ThreePre-treat heavy stains with laundry detergent or stain remover, heeding instructions on the product label. 4Step FourUse the measuring cap of the detergent b! ottle or the cup found in detergent boxes to measure out the right amou! nt of laundry soap according to the manufacturer's instructions. 5Step FivePour the soap into your washer or its detergent dispenser. Add liquid fabric softener, if desired, according to the product instructions. 6Step SixChoose the water temperature for the wash cycle:hot, warm or cold; save on energy and opt for a cold rinse cycle for any load. Consult the labels on your clothes, your washing machine's instruction manual or the detergent container for recommendations on washing temperature. In general, use cold water to protect colors and darks from bleeding or fading, and to avoid shrinkage. Use warm or hot water for durable fabrics like cotton (make sure they're preshrunk), and to ensure that your whites stay white. 7Step SevenStart the washer before adding clothes, if you have time, to allow the detergent to dissolve in the water. The regular cycle suffices for most laundry, but use the gentle cycle for sheer or delicate fabrics. Adjust the water level to the size of y! our load. 8Step EightIf you need to add bleach, allow the machine to run for a few minutes to mix the detergent and water, then add about a cup of bleach to the washer or the bleach dispenser. 9Step NineAdd your clothes, close the lid and let the machine do its dirty work. Washing takes approximately 45 minutes. 10Step TenPut the clothes (and an anti-static sheet, if desired) in the dryer after the wash is complete. Hang delicates (such as bras and certain sweaters) to air dry on a clothing rack or hanger. Check tags if in doubt. 11Step Eleven Remove lint from the dryer's lint tray. 12Step Twelve Select the correct drying temperature for your laundry load: low for delicates, medium for most fabrics and high for cotton. When in doubt, low or medium is the safest bet. 13Step Thirteen Close and turn on the dryer. Expect the drying cycle to take an hour or more for a full load. 14Step Fourteen Once the clothes are completely dry, remove them from the dryer or drying rack and fo! ld your clean laundry. Tips & WarningsIf you stuff too many clothes int! o the washer, it won't clean them well. Allow room for clothes to agitate during the wash cycle. Remember that you should typically dry-clean some fabrics: silk, wool, linen and rayon, for example. You should hand-wash lingerie in the sink with laundry soap designed for delicates. Never add bleach to wash water while clothes are in the washer. The concentrated bleach will whiten and dissolve clothing. Add clothing to the washing machine once the bleach has been mixed well with the water and the washer is half-full. Handle bleach carefully. Avoid splashing it directly onto clothes or yourself. Alden Soldano: The 1st thing you do is: Sort the WHITES/COLO! RS/JEANS/TOWELSWhites - Hot Water - I prefer delicate over normal because prevents less holes in socks. Add only 1/2 cup of bleach of before you put in your clothes into wash. Wait 5 minutes than add. You can add laundry detergent at the same time. You will only need about 1/2 cup of detergent with green in wash load unless the wash machine is close full you add 1 cup of laundry.Colors - Cold water - Use normal setting and you will be fine.If your clothes are new you will need to wash them by them selfsDON'T ADD BLEACH TO COLORS IT WILL BE DIS-COLORED usually drinks yellow or pink depending on the color the bleach spill on.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------DryersIt all depends on upon how much your dryingIf the dryer is full add about 1 hourIf the dryer is medium 30 hourIf the dryer is little bit full 15 minutesWhat them carefully until you mastered the timing your dryerand feel the clothes to see how hot they are. Mayola Sylva: I just throw it all in at once! I don't have any dis coloration or anything either. Fill the washer with clothes, put it on the regular cycle with warm/cold water and let it do it's job. A big hint though is to let the washer fill half way with water first, then add the detergent, then add the clothes.. if you pour the detergent on the clothes it will dis color them. Hand cotton shirts on a hanger to dry after... al the rest throw in the dryer with a couple dryer sheets. It's not as complicated as everyone makes it out to be....Show more
