internet security programs free vs paid.?

Lorine Helwick: 2

Rhett Kaines: The "free" versions of security software are, for the most part, stripped down versions of the full program. The normally do not have all the features of the full program. But if all that a person needs is a good anti virus or anti malware program, these free versions work just fine. I have used free security programs for about 8 years and have never had a problem with them.

Jorge Detlefs: some company's have evil intent others just want to help comodo.com primary business is selling security certificates to commercial corporations by giving you a free security suite the can protect their core business and stay on top of new threats...from the makers of comodo firewall pro.

Mario Stricklan: I suggest you go for the first solution. It's better to turn off Avast's AutoSandbox as Comodo has a better AutoSandbox. Also remember to exclude AvastSvc.exe and AvastUI.exe processes form Comodo and cmdagent.exe and cfp.exe process! es from Avast so that the programs don't conflict with each other. Malwarebytes isn't that necessary. Avast and Comodo provide enough protection.

Jade Ohno: idk i i wonder the same... thats a good question

Kandi Lough: By "Internet Security 2009", I'm hoping that you mean Norton's... otherwise it is a rogue program.Anyhow, you don't have to spend a cent and can built a very good security system. The people who say differently are brainwashed. The following is a copy-and-paste of my own previous answer:------------------I run nothing but freeware and my security is rock-solid.> Firewall: Comodo Internet Security: http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/> Antivirus: Avast v4.8 Home Edition (*): http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html> Real-Time Antimalware: Comodo BOClean: http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html> Browser Immunization: Spybot Search and Destroy (activate the SD Helper function): http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html> Additional brows! er immunization: SpywareBlaster (works well with Spybot): http! ://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.htm...* I use Avast in place of the Comodo Antivirus which is included in Comodo Internet Security... NEVER run two antivirus programs together.> Also consider using Firefox for your main browser, as it is more secure (and has many more features) than Internet Explorer.> Also consider setting up an additional account with *limited* privileges, and do your web-surfing from there....Show more

Matt Tiry: 99%+ of all Free suites are useless. The only reasonably good Security freeware is a firewall. As for Security programs that you pay for...you have to be careful where you buy from. Either the manufacturer's website, or a brick-and-mortar store. Also, do research on the ones you're looking at. There is one "pay me" program with a remarkably similar name to the one you're asking about which *is* malware.Despite one poster's assertions that they are (all) useless...they aren't. Although it is harder, you *still* can become infected ! with some serious malware when using a limited account. After all...cookies are deposited on a computer even when using a limited account, and they are stored even after you log-off. Then there are the ones you receive in e-mails you have to download in order to read. Most of her tips work...but only so far, and even if all are used at the same time, viruses and intrusions into your computer are dead easy. They're called "hackers" for a reason, y'know. :D The only computer it is safe to not have Security on is one that never goes on-line...or even connects to a network.Anyway...generally speaking, you pay for what you get where Security is concerned. If it's free, it's useless. You should have a good subscription based program suite, and it should run between $50 and $100.As for why some programs are free and some aren't...most of the free programs are either "Trial Versions" or are next to useless "look what I can claim to do" like AVGFree.Good Luck!EDIT: Hmmm...Ms. Queller! seems to have some fans...3 thumbs down! lol...Show more

Hipolit! o Rightmire: Yes, they're just as good, because both free and paid security programs are essentially useless. It's better to stop thinking "antivirus" programs will protect you.Instead you should:1. Set up and use almost exclusively a limited user account.http://blogs.msdn.com/aaron_margosis/archive/2004/...2. Google the phrase "social engineering" and read the first five results.http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22social+eng...3. Install Windows updates automatically.http://www.updatexp.com/windows-automatic-updates....4. Use Firefox with the NoScript extension.https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/7225. Turn off autorun in Windows:http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory...6. Do not install or run "antivirus" software. It doesn't actually protect you, it uses up system resources, and it makes you unnecessarily paranoid....Show more
