Doreatha Kjellsen: I sell cars for the largest used car retailer in the world. Right now I have almost 800 cars on my lot for sale. I'm having a crappy month.Cars do not sell themselves. You could have 50,000 cars on the lot and the customer will want one you do not have. Your dealer is not the only one in town and people can shop for cars anywhere, including via the internet. You have to give people a reason to buy from you and your store. It's OK to be aggressive. It is NOT OK to be a dick. Customers who don't like you won't buy from you. It's that simple.Your closing ratio is about 8-12%. You will need to see 100-150 customers per month to make any amount of real money. Floor traffic is king until you get established at a store where people know your name and see you personally. Do whatever you can to market yourself and get your name out there as the go-to guy for car sales. Car sales can be fun or a nightmare. All depends on the store you work at and y! our management team. Spend time checking out the managers and the feel of the store. If it seems like a cool place to work at, you'll prolly do OK. If everyone seems like an uptight prick or a jerk off, go someplace else....Show more
Marvella Benward: Most sales managers, are looking for high energy go getters with a shark like mentality, A good used car salesman, has to be motivated, well informed about what he is selling, knowledgabe about a variety of things, have the ability to talk a blind man out of his last dime to buy a car he does not need, and most importantly, be able to lie with a straight face. yes, a car will sell itself, if it was surrounded by a bunch of rusty broken crap. Except thats not what you have, you have 400,000 to well over a million dollars in inventory, that is changing everyday, you need to find out what a customer wants, go find what he wants and talk him into buying it, even if its the wrong color. Most car salesman are *****, and the! head ******** makes the most money, car sales is wierd, you c! an dang near starve one month, and sell so many cars the next month you think you were god. good luck....Show more
August Hubbard: A reporter went undercover a few years ago to write an article about what goes on at car dealerships. You might find his story interesting. Be sure to read the original article as well as this update.
Darrel Stele: All used cars are sold "as-is" unless state laws dictate that a warranty be included or the dealership opts to offer warranty coverage. A 2007 model Scion might possibly still have some warranty left on the engine and powertrain, time-wise. What the dealer chooses to do in "reconditioning" a car, or preparing it for sale, may depend heavily on how much profit they need to make from the car. If they take a nice car in on trade, and it needs minor repairs, odds are they're going to do those repairs, because it increases the car's value. If they take a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero with 100k miles, though, that's in need of an en! gine rebuild, they're not going to fix it. They're going to sell the car at auction, as-is, caveat emptor. They probably will have detailed the engine bay before putting the car out on the lot, so dirt and gunk buildup might not be easy to spot. And since it's a car lot, who's to say where that oil spot on the pavement came from, right? But If the car is in overall good condition, and sounds good both on cold start-up and after it's been running for a while, then the engine is probably fine. Oh - and you don't have to have a mechanic come with you. You can ask the dealer to take it to the mechanic of your choice. They should have no problem doing that if the car is in good condition and you like it and are seriously considering buying it....Show more
