Miguel Densley: There are some military aircraft that have a distinctly different engine type and sound from civilian aircraft.To make a broad generalization (which doesn't always work), most civilian jets are TurboFan type engines, which emit a High Pitch whine. Military cargo and transport aircraft may not sound that much different from civilian airliners. But fighter and bomber types will tend to be lower pitched in sound, and afterburner is a distinct low pitch sound which may appear in combination with sonic boom if they are supersonic. Sonic boom sounds like a loud pop, ping or rattle, the rattle being if you are around glass which resonates the boom. No current civilian aircraft are supersonic....Show more
